Before and After #13: Storytelling
Storytelling graphics are really something that can be utilized in any subject area and/or grade level. These types of graphics can display categories, a story, a function, or emotions. When students are being recruited for band in 5th grade and once they are in beginning band in 6th grade, the various instrument families within band are discussed. It is important that students understand what instruments fall into which category and then later we explain why.
Within the band there are three instrument categories, including brass, woodwind, and percussion. In this graphic, I utilized the various boxes, with different sizes, to display the text and pictures for each family. The larger box shows the title of the "story" being told. The medium sized boxes in the middle show the pictures of the instruments, with smaller boxes underneath showing the family name. The boxes under the name list the instrument names. The boxes help to segment the information while also keeping each "story part" in columns.
