Before and After #12: Visualization
The original graphic gave statistics on population for Fall 2015. A basic bar graph was used with numbers. This does show the differences between the numbers pretty easily, but the graphic was very basic and somewhat plain. When I redid the graphic I chose to create a pictograph instead. I used the image of a person to represent 1,000 people for each icon. Since the graph was showing population, this is why I chose the icon of a person for the pictograph. I feel that the relation of population to the icon is a helpful visualization. This pictograph also then compares the amounts of people in each area. It is clear and easy to see which places have a much greater population than others. I kept the colors simple, so that nothing distracted from the data at hand. For this chart, I feel that more was being compared on the variety of populations than relating the amounts right to the specific numbers themselves (more approximate than actual).
I definitely feel that for something like this, a pictograph can be a great resource. It helps show the difference in numbers but also uses an icon/image related to the data to represent the information.
